A Short Century. Poetics and politics from 1929 to the present Course

19:0020:00 h
Venue: MACBA
Plaça dels Àngels, 1
08001 Barcelona
Price: From 10€ to 20€

The new display of the MACBA Collection presents a chronological, yet non-linear survey of the fonds of the Museum that highlights, through a number of key works, some of the fundamental tensions produced over the last century: those within the artistic movements themselves, and in relation to other cultural manifestations and their social-political context.
Over several sessions, this course will address some of the key issues, also explored in the exhibition itself: the tension between utopia and crisis that characterises the twentieth century; the position of Barcelona within the European context of modernity; the politics of abstraction; art as propaganda and action in the 1960s; feminisms in the context of Spain in the seventies; the AIDS crisis and its impact on art in the eighties; and in the nineties, the celebration in 1992 of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas and its impact on the artistic theory and practice of the moment.
