The polyhedral figure of the architect Ignasi de Solà-Morales (Barcelona, 1942 – Amsterdam, 2001) brings together the most significant features of a certain way of understanding architecture, closely linked to the city of Barcelona, its heritage and its modernisation project. Through his investigative work into the history, theory and practice of architecture, the strengthening of an academic pedagogy in a process of constant reformulation, and his vocation for public service, Solà-Morales is a key figure in understanding the evolution of this city in the second half of the 20th century.

Ignasi de Solà-Morales played a decisive role in the essential review of the social function of the architect, providing this profession with a renewed critical conscience. His presence as a catalyst of diverse sensitivities and different positions converted him into an international figurehead for understanding the complex balance between architectonic creation and the values of civic culture.

Through his training as a philosopher and his interest in semiotics, Solà-Morales proposed the construction of a set of specific terminology for considering and, especially, discussing architecture with a language that transcends disciplinary limits, linking it to the most suggestive lines of thought of his time. Likewise, many of his architectonic and urbanistic concepts have acquired a notable prominence, and continue to be persistently revisited.

The exhibition aims to review to what extent his ideas and stances are maintained in modern society, both based on thoughtful observation, analysis and the lucid interpretation of the reality of the world he lived in. It aims to reveal the modern day significance of this multifaceted figure, who knew how to combine theoretical work—whether concentrated or speculative—with the construction of a space which is open to dialogue and debate, in which architecture is involved in the unstable sphere of activity of contemporary urban culture.
