Quantum emerged from an artistic residency organised at the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, CERN in Geneva. The Swiss choreographer Gilles Jobin learnt that we are floating stardust in space, and that gravity is the weakest force in the universe – a shock for a contemporary dancer steeped in the notion of the ground as an anchor! And he met a rising star on the visual arts scene, the German artist Julius von Bismarck.

Their meeting was a high-energy artistic collision. Artists among scientists, the choreographer and the visual artist fed hungrily on the universe of numbers and abstractions for several months, then returning to Geneva and Berlin to complete the highly sophisticated technical development of Quantum – an ode to particle physics for six dancers – before finally combining their respective work onstage.

Consisting of four lamps swinging in constant circular motion that highlight the principal laws of physics, the installation responds to imperceptible fluctuations resulting from precise programming that follows the rhythm of the choreography: the lights and dancers explore the mysteries of antimatter and the combination of choreographic and visual arts succeeds wonderfully in surrounding the laws of physics with an aura of beauty.
