Is the search for error the ultimate bait of marketing or a tool for discovery and subversion?

A glitch is the result of unexpected or intentional variations that occur during the transmission of digital information, altering the original data and leaving a new form: the fault.

This course combines the theoretical and practical study of glitch art, an art that incorporates the failure in computer data in the search for new aesthetics that put in crisis the apparent perfection of machines and computerized systems.

We will review examples of art with machines since the 19th century to understand technological evolution and its influence on aesthetics and philosophy. We will study methods for the design and implementation of computer errors applied to audiovisual art and 3D design and printing, learning to analyze and exploit vulnerabilities in the main formats and codecs of digital files using experimental techniques that incorporate random and accidental.

Together with hexadecimal and ASCII code editors we will use graphics / movie / audio editors to experiment with the transcoding phenomena of audiovisual signals.

We will address the creative potential of glitch or computer error applied to the design and fabrication of 3D objects using free software tools such as Processing and Blender.

Aimed at: Visual and plastic theorists and artists, musicians, photographers, computer scientists, researchers in science and humanities, 3D design and digital manufacturing.


To have historical and conceptual knowledge that supports our research and creative audiovisual and 3D production

To achieve abilities, to interpret and manipulate raw digital data and exploit vulnerabilities of codecs and formats.

To develop research projects and audio-visual production, sound, 3D design and manufacturing based on digital error.

Requirements: No prior knowledge required. It is only necessary to attend with a laptop. Participants are invited to bring project initiatives to be developed during the course.

Course contents:

– Technological evolution, randomness, sciences of the complexity and accidents: Introduction to the complex historical relation between art, politics, science and technologies. Archeology of the arts and technologies for listening and vision. Questions to the ideas of human progress. Analysis of texts by Paul Virilio, Siegfried Zielinski, Gilles Deleuze.

-Studies of historical cases of the aesthetics of error, referents of controlled destruction, and the art of failure since the nineteenth century with applications in a wide spectrum from graphic and audiovisual production, video games and net art, sound art, 3D design and manufacturing, to urban art, interactive arts, action art and performance.

– Learn the language of the machine: Introduction to digital data structures. Studies on encapsulation formats and codecs, analysis and exploitation of logical and structural vulnerabilities with applications in image data, audio, video and 3D objects. Analysis of classical techniques such as transcoding, data-bending, datamosh.

– Misuse of software: hexadecimal and ASCII code editors, sound editors (Audacity) and films (Blender, Premiere), raster and vector graphics editors (Gimp, Photoshop, Illustrator, Inkscape) and 3D object editors (Blender, Cure).

-Develop audiovisual and 3D projects that cultivate the failure of the most popular image codecs (.RAW, .JPG, .TIF, .PNG), audio (.WAV, .MP3), movies (.MOV, .AVI , .MP4), and 3D object data structures (STL, OBJ).
