Presentation

Presentation of the “Fractura” project by its authors, the artists Azahara Cerezo and Mayte Gómez. It is an immersive experience that addresses the specifics of the medium itself, that is to say, it is a piece that reflects on technology from the point of view of technology itself, while investigating the importance of technological interfaces and devices in the our everyday life and the material implications of these supposedly “virtual” environments.

The Oculus Quest 2 is the best-selling and most popular Virtual Reality device today. Owned by the big company Meta (formerly Facebook), the Oculus Quest 2 offers an immersive experience for two eyes, two ears, one body. As we immerse ourselves in virtual worlds, the device continuously monitors and scans the space around us and our movements using 4 integrated infrared cameras and 2 controllers with multiple accelerometers and gyroscopes. However, the operation of the device itself, as well as the commercial logics hidden behind the minimalist aesthetics of Silicon Valley and the idea of immersion offered by virtual reality extend far beyond the present moment. In relation to these aspects, Jonathan Crary states that “to understand the ways in which we listen, look or concentrate, it is necessary to investigate their historical resonances”.

“Fractura” is an immersive essay developed by Azahara Cerezo and Mayte Gómez Molina and produced by Cultural Rizoma.
