L’última terra by Miquel Matas Ferrer is a long-term research around a materiality which is about to disappear. Delving into the last existence of a type of white clay obtained in the surroundings of La Bisbal d’Empordà, Miquel Matas Ferrer activates a reflection about how the extractivist dynamics and the practices that are linked to them define and transform a given territory.
In this attempt to grasp the fragilitu of a matter on the verge of not being, the artist deploys a series of visual, objectual and performative approaches that try to make this disappearance tactile, haptic.
This project, which began in 2022 as part of Cultural Rizoma’s research and creation support program, was first presented at SWAB Barcelona Art Fair 2023 under the SOLO by Fundación Vila Casas program and, over the last few months, has been displayed in Cultural Rizoma’s space.
Miquel Matas Ferrer (b.1991, La Bisbal d’Empordà) explores, through artistic practice, the contemporary realities of forgotten imaginaries and ancestral know-hows. Natural resources, craftsmanship and material transformations are his main fields of interest. Its work is usually formalizes through objects, installations and films.
