Marina Zurkow is a digital artist who explores the relationship between nature, culture, and society, focusing on what she describes as ‘complex problems’, those problems that reveal our abusive interactions with the natural environment. Zurkow is the first artist selected within the ‘Antroposcenes, narratives about life in the Anthropocene’ cycle at ‘La Façana de Lo Pati’

The artist will project ‘OOzy #3: just because you can’t swim in it doesn’t mean it isn’t there’, a piece that offers the possibility to dream about the deepest parts of the ocean, to imagine and protect these landscapes, which are indeed an unknown, critical, and living component of our planetary systems. At 6,000 meters below the ocean’s surface, a human would experience overwhelming pressure, freezing temperatures, and total darkness. But in these areas, coral reefs, squids, and sea spiders thrive, among many other animals.

Zurkow’s work has been exhibited in numerous international art museums. Zurkow was a Guggenheim fellow in 2011 and received grants from the Rockefeller Foundation.

Throughout 2024, the ‘outdoor room’ of Lo Pati will host ‘Antroposcenes, narratives about life in the Anthropocene’, a cycle curated by Pau Waelder with six artistic proposals. Waelder has chosen the work of six artists who reflect on life in the Anthropocene, a concept that refers to the idea of a geological period to define the times marked by the decisive influence of human activity on our planet. The artists participating in this selection have created audiovisual works that offer us, from different perspectives, scenes of life in the Anthropocene, particularly those environments and systems that we ignore but that play a crucial role in life on Earth.
