“How to write a statement? What function do calls for submissions have in an artist’s career? How do we use social networks? What are best practices? These and other questions will be answered in the workshop “Tools for communication and professionalization for artists 2024,” which will take place from May 6th to 10th, from 5:00 to 8:30 pm at Lo Pati in Amposta.
The course is organized by the Plataforma Assembleària d’Artistes de Catalunya (PAAC) in collaboration with Lo Pati and the Associació Artsud, with funding from the Department of Culture. The workshop will be taught by the artist and teacher Joan Morey and aims to address the needs of artists who are starting their professional careers and realize that, in addition to having knowledge about the creative process, they also need tools and resources for cataloging, communication, or promoting their work. In general, these subjects are not taught in conventional artistic training spaces.
And it is that the artist’s work, before and after being exhibited or communicated publicly, goes through various phases: formalization, cataloging, promotion, marketing, preservation, and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to understand broadly what responsibilities creators have, what infrastructures and tasks exhibition spaces have, or to understand the particularities of the calls for submissions for the production of projects, awards and grants, or artist residencies. If the artist knows how to handle each of these situations, professionalization in the field of art will be easier.
During this workshop, examples will be presented, cases will be analyzed, and practical exercises will be proposed to expand or update personal resources and skills. The goal: to achieve a professional artistic profile and thus achieve logical purposes as professional artists according to each one’s trajectory. The price of the course is €50 for non-members, free for members of the Plataforma Assembleària d’Artistes de Catalunya (PAAC), the Associació Artsud, for members of Irradiador, and for students under thirty years old. Teacher’s Profile
Joan Morey (Mallorca, 1972). Bachelor’s and DEA in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona. Throughout his professional career, he has developed numerous projects and exhibitions in museums, art centers, institutions, and galleries. He has received various production awards and grants such as the Spanish Academy in Rome (2014-15). He combines his work as an artist and teacher, mainly in the audiovisual and artistic marketing sectors. He organizes and participates in continuous training programs for artists (driven by PAAC or other organizations linked to contemporary art), collaborates as a guest expert in various master’s and postgraduate programs, and teaches monographs and workshops at universities, art and design schools, or platforms for Lifelong Learning focused on the professional facet of the artist. As a manager, he has been part of the team of the contemporary art program Sant Andreu Contemporani (2013, Barcelona), and for three consecutive editions (2010, 2011, and 2012) he was a jury member, project coordinator, and monitoring of exhibition assembly in the public call BCN_Producció, La Capella (ICUB, Institut de Cultura de Barcelona).”
